BMP-VPV - tracked recovery vehicle
The vehicle was designed mainly to support mechanised units when it was necessary to transfer damaged or stuck armoured equipment up to 15t. The 3-member crew consisted of a commander-crane operator, a driver-binder and a logistician-machinist. The improved chassis includes improvements that are identical to the BMP2.
Development began in ZTS-VVÚ in Martin in the second half of the 1980s and it was a Czech patent. Production took place at Strojírny PPS Detva (currently the Slovak Rep.) where it started in 1984 and the total volume of vehicles produced was 363. The absolute majority of the vehicles were mounted on the BMP2 chassis and just a few on the BMP1. Equipped with the original equipment, the VPV was able to tow the following vehicles: BMP-1, BMP-2, OT-64, BRDM-2, OT-62. A machine gun operated from the outside from the commander’s lid, was placed on the upper part for protection.
