R5 Bečva (OT-R5) An amphibious, armoured tracked vehicle on a BMP-1 chassis, used as a command-staff vehicle with a wide range of communication equipment. It was designed mainly to create and keep constant control of the numerous mechanised units. The crew consisted of 5 members: driver, commander, gunner and 2 specialists (radio operators).
The original BMP-1 body ceiling was cut off at 2,060 mm and the height was increased by 500 mm. The elevated body has hatches, a gunner’s turret, air suction, antenna joints and grommets. On the outside there are other connection points, an electrical switchboard with a crane elevator, independent heating, handles, and boxes for equipment and sappers tools. The front has vehicle batteries. There are anti-slip metal grids on the roof.
The vehicle’s floor is adapted for special-purpose batteries and seats. Inside the body there are welded-on pieces for attaching parts. The driver’s and the commander’s posts are identical to the BMP-1. The staff workplace is situated in the elevated part of the body at the front. There are a working table, boards for maps, a magnetic board, a place for storing documentation and the staff requirements. On the longer lateral side of the working table are two seats, equipped with safety belts, for staff members. Between the seats there is a storage space. The radio communicator’s workplace in the rear part is separated from the staff workplace by a frame, in which radio stations, the central control panel and other communication devices are installed. A safe is also a part of the frame. Between the radio communicators seats there is the main fuel tank. Its upper desk is designed to be used as a working table.
The vehicle is equipped with 12 TNPO-170 observation devices (four are at the driver’s place, two are in the commander’s turret, two on both the right and left sides in the radio communicators area and one on both sides in the rear door). For firing, a TNPO-350B periscope is installed instead of the central observation device. A12.7 mm calibre DŠKM machine gun was included to protect the vehicle.
