VT-55A Special track vehicle built on a T-55A medium tank chassis. It was designed to recover equipment stuck on an obstacle or equipment damaged in combat or even to make repairs. Its armour, resistance to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and complete drive (engine, gearbox) were maintained and they are identical to the T-55A type.
3-member crew, consisting of a driver-technician, a binder and a commander.
The development was based on the licence documentation for the original Soviet recovery tank installed on a T-54 (BTS - II) chassis which was made at ZTS VVÚ Martin in 1964. Development was stopped in 1968 and in 1969 production began and continued until 1983. One fifth of the production volume was delivered to the Czechoslovak People’s Army, one half, to the former Warsaw Pact members, and the rest, to non-communist (but sympathising) states.
