BTR-60 PU-12 - Bronetransporter (БТР-BTR, Бронетранспортер ”armoured carrier“) An amphibious 8-wheel armoured carrier with a central tyre inflation system, commander-version for battalions and higher levels, a vehicle with extended communication equipment and without a gun turret. The crew consisted of a battery or platoon commander, a team commander, a searcher - draughtsman, a radio operator and a driver. The left engine drives the second and the fourth axle, while the right engine drives the front winch and the first and the third axle. The driver’s and the commander’s positions are in the front part, the central part serves for the crew and the rear part houses the engines.
The vehicle was developed at the end of the 1950s as a substitute for the BTR-152 which had become outdated. During the 1960s many improvements were made and at that time the vehicle was the most important armoured carrier in the Soviet Army. It was used by 30 states all over the world, both the communist and the ‘friendly’ ones.
